Happy October! Who is ready for a delicious seasonal beverage?
I first wrote a blog post about some Northeast D.C. tours and tastings years ago, before having a baby. But I decided to make some updates because Ivy City has exploded since I last visited and wrote my blog post. You can read reviews here and here to create your own itinerary.
Take a Lyft and start your adventure at Atlas Brew Works (2052 West Virginia Ave NE), their first tours begin at noon on Saturdays. If you’re interested in a tour, you must inquire at the bar because tours are not guaranteed. Unfortunately when I toured the brewery years ago I couldn’t hear anything because there was a lot of background noise from the people drinking in the warehouse. But I still enjoyed the atmosphere. We tried some beers and played a round of corn hole after our tour.
The next stop is the New Columbia Distillers (1832 Fenwick St. NE) for a free tour and gin tasting. They host tours at 1:30 p.m., 3 p.m., and 4:30 p.m. on Saturdays. The first and only time I visited this distillery years ago, my friends and I were able to sample their original and seasonal gins before beginning a really fantastic tour.
One of the distillery co-owners began his very detailed tour by showing us the local grains they use to make their gin. He let us sample the local and fresh grain. Then he explained the entire distilling process in a simplified way that I could understand.
Of course, don’t forget to grab food before or after a tour. There are now plenty of great options, such as the Tavern at Ivy City Smokehouse. Unfortunately I never had the chance to try their food before we moved, but I only heard positive reviews from friends.
Cheers and bon appétit!
