If you’re planning a trip to San Fransisco, I strongly recommend taking a side trip to Big Sur. On your way to or from Big Sur, you can discover the 17-mile drive. Once you get to Big Sur, there are many options of places to stay or camp. Years ago, my husband and I spent a weekend in Big Sur and the views were absolutely incredible! To see the views (and a surprise flash mob during a wedding we attended),click here.
We chose to stay in Lucia Lodgebecause it was close to the wedding, but I don’t recommend it. The views are breathtaking, but the rooms are very small and outdated and the continental breakfast was not very good. Spend your money on a hotel like the Post Ranch Inn instead. All lodging in Big Sur is very expensive, but if you book a year in advance (or go camping), you can find reasonable rates.
Please note that we visited the Big Sur before having kids and I would like to bring my family once my son is much older and able to appreciate the views. There are a lot of very steep cliffs so I don’t think it’s very toddler-friendly.
